Taylor Swift's Concerts Shook the Earth!

Taylor Swift's recent concerts in Edinburgh didn't just break attendance records—they literally shook the ground. Thousands of cheering, dancing ‘Swifties’ attending her Eras Tour concerts last weekend made the earth move, causing seismic activity that was detected by earthquake monitors up to 6km (3.73 miles) away, according to the British Geological Survey (BGS).

Swift's three performances at Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium drew around 200,000 fans over the weekend. The most energetic crowd was on Friday night, with 73,000 attendees dancing, cheering, and stomping loud enough to cause seismic activity equivalent to a 2.3 magnitude earthquake. The BGS detected the greatest commotion during the songs “Cruel Summer,” “Ready For It?,” and “Champagne Problems.” Notably, the Friday night concert recorded the highest seismic activity, with the ground moving a maximum of 23.4 nanometres (nm), compared to 22.8nm on Saturday and 23.3nm on Sunday.

The seismic activity, which peaked at 160 beats per minute (bpm) during “Ready For It?,” was mainly caused by the dancing fans, who generated approximately 80kW of power during the song. The BGS monitoring stations around the Scottish capital registered these vibrations, with one of the stations located at the BGS office at Heriot Watt University, 6km away.

Callum Harrison, a BGS seismologist, expressed his amazement at being able to measure the reaction of thousands of concertgoers remotely. He noted that exploring seismic activity created by such a phenomenon was thrilling and highlighted Scotland’s reputation for enthusiastic audiences.

Swift's Eras Tour is on track to become the highest-grossing concert tour in history, with 152 dates across 22 countries and projected earnings exceeding $2 billion (£1.56 billion) by the time it concludes in December. This series of concerts in Edinburgh marked the first of 17 UK dates, culminating in a record-breaking eight-night run at London’s Wembley Stadium.
