2024 Copa América: Quarterfinals Begin as Eight Teams Battle for the Title

Eight Teams Begin Their Journey in the Knockout Stage Towards the Conmebol Tournament Title, with Host United States Already Eliminated

But it was within the realm of possibilities. Uruguay, led by Marcelo Bielsa, confirmed all the good things they showed in their first two matches (3-1 against Panama and 5-0 against Bolivia) and achieved a perfect score to become the absolute leader of their Group. They defeated the United States 1-0 and now await the second-place team from Group D, which, with Paraguay eliminated, will be either Colombia, Brazil, or Costa Rica. Panama benefited from Argentina's victory: they defeated Bolivia and surpassed the North Americans in the standings. Yes, the host country has made an early exit from the cup.

On Saturday night, Argentina beat Peru 2-0 with goals from Lautaro Martínez, finishing first in Group A of the Copa América with a perfect score and no goals conceded. On Sunday, Lionel Scaloni's team learned their opponent after the conclusion of Group B, which included Venezuela, Ecuador, Mexico, and Jamaica. The other team advancing to the quarterfinals from Argentina's zone was Canada, who defeated Chile, knocking them out of the tournament without scoring a single goal. Peru, having lost to Argentina, also bid farewell to the competition.

Argentina's opponent was determined on Sunday when Mexico couldn't beat Ecuador: they drew 0-0, making Ecuador Argentina's rival. Just like in the 2021 Copa América, Messi and company will face the Ecuadorian team in the quarterfinals. That previous encounter ended 3-0 with goals from Rodrigo De Paul, Lautaro Martínez, and Messi. Two steps later (Colombia in the semifinals and Brazil in the final), the title was won at the Maracanã after 28 years.

When Will the 2024 Copa América Quarterfinals Begin?

Conmebol has scheduled the knockout phase to start on Thursday, July 4, with Argentina, who was the first to qualify from Group A, opening the stage thanks to their victories against Canada and Chile, and then cementing their perfect score with a win over Peru.

Argentina will face Ecuador, the team that finished second in Group B with 4 points: they defeated Jamaica, drew with Mexico, and lost to Venezuela. The other qualified teams are Uruguay and Panama, but they still need to determine their opponents, depending on the outcomes of the matches between Colombia vs. Brazil and Costa Rica vs. Paraguay.

Quarterfinal Schedule:

Argentina vs Ecuador / Thursday, July 4 / NRG Stadium
Venezuela vs Canada / Friday, July 5 / AT&T Stadium
Panama vs Colombia Group D / Saturday, July 6 / State Farm Stadium
Uruguay vs Brazil Group D / Saturday, July 6 / Allegiant Stadium

What Happens If There Is a Tie in the Quarterfinals?

The 2024 Copa América format states that if there is a draw in the 90 minutes of the knockout stage, the match will be decided by penalty kicks. There will be no extra time; the match will go directly to the penalty shootout. This rule applies to the quarterfinals, semifinals, and the third-place match of the international competition.

In the final, if the match ends in a draw, it will proceed to extra time of 30 minutes: two 15-minute halves. If the tie persists, it will be decided by penalties. The Conmebol tournament champion will be crowned on Sunday, July 14, at 19:00 hours at Hard Rock Stadium.
